How rough is a Sedona jeep tour?

In the photographs every tour looks the same: a jeep, red rock and blue sky. On the ground they range from a smooth canyon road to a genuine back-country wagon trail.

The short answer

As rough or as gentle as you choose. Two of the six never go off-road at all, one runs mild dirt roads, one climbs rugged terrain, and one is described by its own operator as "very rugged, bouncy". The restriction list on each listing is the honest guide. The marketing photo is not.

All six, smoothest first

The two that stay smooth

The Oak Creek Canyon tour is pavement only, and the listing says so twice. You sit in an open jeep on a sealed road with a live guide, which makes it the right choice for anyone with a bad back, an older parent or simply no wish to be thrown around. The vortex tour also states plainly that it does no off-roading. The driving is smooth, but you do get out and walk on uneven ground at the sites, so it is not the answer for limited mobility.

The middle ground

Red Rock Range is the gentlest of the trail tours: mild dirt roads west of uptown, wide views and a certified guide. The operator describes it as an introduction, and that is fair. Ancient Ruins drives rugged desert to reach the cliff dwelling, then asks you to walk about 1.2 km from the parking area through the site and back. The walk, more than the drive, is the thing to check.

The two that bounce

Scenic Rim climbs rugged terrain onto the Mogollon Rim and comes down through steep valleys, which is where most of the bumping happens. Expect to hold on. Nobody is likely to call it extreme, and the operator publishes no specific restrictions, but it is an open vehicle on uneven ground and you will feel it.

Rim Run Supreme is the real thing. It follows an old wagon trail through the back country, and AZ Safari is unusually direct about what that means: no children under five, and not suggested for anyone pregnant, with neck or back problems, or recovering from surgery. If that list describes anyone in your group, choose another tour. If it does not, this is the most fun on the page and the highest rated, 5.0 from 58 reviews.

How to choose

  • Anyone with a bad back, or a nervous passenger: Oak Creek Canyon.
  • A first trip onto the trails, gently: Red Rock Range.
  • Some bumping in exchange for the best view: Scenic Rim.
  • As rough as it gets: Rim Run Supreme.

The best view, with a moderate ride

~$129 per person, 2.5 hours, from the valley floor onto the Mogollon Rim with live narration. Rated 4.8 out of 5 from 308 reviews.

In short

Oak Creek Canyon and the vortex tour stay smooth, Red Rock Range is mild, Ancient Ruins and Scenic Rim are properly bumpy, and Rim Run Supreme is rough enough to come with a medical warning. Read each restriction list against your group before you book. The comparison table on the main page puts all six side by side.
