Sedona jeep tours with kids
Most children love a jeep tour. The rules on who can go differ by tour, though, and on two of them the operator is firm. Check this before you book a family.
The short answer
Every tour here takes school-age children, and most take younger ones. The exceptions: Rim Run Supreme takes nobody under five, the vortex tour nobody under two, and Oak Creek Canyon no babies under one. On the AZ Safari tours, any child aged five or under needs a full car seat, and you bring it.
Age limits, tour by tour
| Tour | Minimum age | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Oak Creek Canyon | 1 year | Car seat for under-fives; pavement only, 1.5 hours |
| Guided Vortex | 2 years | Car seat for under-fives; walking on uneven ground |
| Rim Run Supreme | 5 years | Very rugged and bouncy, by the operator's own description |
| Scenic Rim | None published | Rugged terrain; 2.5 hours; hotel pick-up included |
| Red Rock Range | None published | The gentlest dirt roads; 2 hours |
| Ancient Ruins | None published | The longest at 3 hours, plus a walk of about 1.2 km |
Where no minimum age is published, it is worth asking the operator about very young children before you book, especially on the bumpier tours.
The car seat rule
On the AZ Safari tours, children aged five or under need a full car seat, required under Arizona state law, and the operator expects you to provide it. If you are travelling without one, ask Pink Jeep how they seat young children before you book one of their three tours.
Which ride suits which age
- Toddlers and preschoolers: keep it short and smooth. Oak Creek Canyon is ninety minutes on tarmac, and Red Rock Range is two hours on mild dirt roads.
- School age: almost anything. Scenic Rim has the climb and the big view, and Ancient Ruins turns a jeep ride into a real-life history lesson, if they can manage the walk.
- Teenagers: Rim Run Supreme. It is the roughest ride on the page, it comes with old western film sites, and the five-and-over rule is no obstacle at that age.
Practical tips for families
- Watch the group tip. A family of six or more on an AZ Safari tour pays an 18% gratuity upfront at check-in.
- Book a morning in summer. It is cooler, and the July and August storms usually arrive in the afternoon.
- Bring water and snacks on the Pink Jeep tours. Food and drink are not included.
- Dress them in layers. Children get cold faster in an open jeep, especially on the rim. See what to wear.
- Plan a bathroom stop. The Rim Run Supreme listing notes there is no bathroom on site.
Our pick for a family with school-age children
Scenic Rim, ~$129 per person: 2.5 hours, hotel pick-up in Sedona and the climb onto the Mogollon Rim. Rated 4.8 out of 5 from 308 reviews.
In short
Short and smooth for the youngest, Scenic Rim or Ancient Ruins for school-age children, Rim Run Supreme for teenagers only. Check the minimum ages, bring a car seat for under-fives on AZ Safari, and budget for the automatic tip if your group is six or more. The questions section on the main page covers the rest.
